SEO FAQ

SEO FAQ:
What is a Search Engine?
A search engine is an online database of websites that allows Internet users to search for information contained on websites contained in the database by "Keywords".

Keywords are words that Internet searches are likely to use when looking for information on a specific topic. For example, the words "grad schools" would likely be used when looking for information on continuing post-secondary education.

Each search engine has slightly different behaviors and characteristics.

What is a Directory?
A directory is a search tool much like a search engine but with a few major differences. Directories tend to employ human editors to review and rank websites submitted to their database. Yahoo! is the most well known example of a directory. Most directories catalog websites based on a variety of topic categories such as Business and Economics, or Arts and Culture. Most directories demand payment before assigning a website review to one of their editors.

What is PPC or Pay Per Click?
Several Search tools are now offering Pay per Click rankings. Companies such as GoTo and iWon allow webmasters the chance to purchase placement in an auction system. WDO has several plans for managing bidding accounts and finding the least expensive keywords to bid on.

Is there a simple solution to top placement?
There is no simple solution to attaining high search engine rankings. Search engine optimization is difficult work and requires a strong knowledge of how the Internet functions and how search engines operate.

Are not all search engines the same?
Each search tool has its own unique characteristics. As businesses, each search tool has found ways to make its service slightly different from other search tools.

Will my website stay at the #1 position once my website is placed there by WDO?
Search Engine rankings fluctuate frequently, however, if your site is properly maintained by search engine specialists month to month then it is likely that the movement will be confined to within the top10 positions.
TIP: WDO offers a monthly maintenance service, which is designed to maintain optimal positioning for existing clientele.

My website did not get accepted last time I submitted to the search engines... why?
Search Engine listings are not guaranteed to everyone who posts a website to the Internet. Search engines are for-profit businesses and have the right to refuse to list any site for virtually any reason. At WDO we specialize in getting sites listed on Search Engines. We ensure all bases are covered and all necessary elements are present before submitting the finalized site to the search engines or directories.

How long does it take to see results?
It can take between 2 - 12 weeks to see results, depending on each search engine. WDO starts tracking your website's performance 14 days after submission. We will forward all results as they come in over time. Ask about our reporting services.

How does the Search Engine find websites?
There are two ways a search engine can find a website to add to its database. The first and most direct method is to accept submissions from website designers and optimizers. Most search engines have a "submit your URL" section inviting submissions from Internet users.

The second, and least obvious method of finding websites is to send a "spider" to follow each and every link on, off, and through a website. New URLs encountered by the spider will be added to the database. In this way, some search engines will grow very rapidly.

What is a "Spider"?
A "spider" is an electronic robot that travels the web examining websites in order to add them to a search engine database and rank them according to the specific ranking criteria for that search engine. Most search engines use spiders to quickly and efficiently canvass the web for information.

What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization is the process of making websites search engine friendly. The process often involves minor modifications to, or additions of, several standard elements of a website.

What do you mean by Search Engine Friendly?
We use this term to describe a website that has specific elements added or modified to attract and please search engine spiders or live directory editors.

Why might I need to have extra elements added to my website?
A search engine spider is an automated program that electronically probes every URL submitted to its database. As the spider is a computer program, it is designed to look for and rank very specific items on each page it probes. If those elements are present, the spider computes a higher ranking than it would if those elements were not present.

If these elements are so important, why didn't they get added when my site was originally designed?
Most website designers haven't learned the importance of search engine friendly design. In almost every case we've encountered, the site designer is a highly skilled and creative person whose job is to put your ideas on the web. More often than not, the designers have not received any training in search engine optimization and don't think about it while pursuing a cool looking design. Search engines are also constantly changing their ranking criteria. They do this to prevent gross manipulation of their search tools. Often, website designers are not fully up to date with changes at search engines. For an example, ask your website designers about Theme Engines. At WDO, we spend a good portion of our time studying how search engines work and how any sudden changes might effect our clients.

Why don't I just do the work myself and save money?
You can do the work yourself. You will need to continuously update your knowledge of how the various search engines work and any changes made in the way they work. This shouldn't take you too much time. Once you get the hang of it, search engine optimization can be as simple as re-shoeing the brake pads on your car or replacing the motherboard and system bios in your computer.

You should know that if you make a mistake in optimization and submission, it can take months to find the mistake and fix it, resubmit the site and obtain the search engine ranking you desired. Our six years of experience with search engine optimization helps us avoid most mistakes.

SEO Maintenance

Need Reliable Website Maintenance?
Once the basic pages of your website are online, it’s important to keep them fresh and constantly updated with relevant, topical content. Any successful business is a dynamic entity - as your company grows and changes, your site should grow and change as well, reflecting your new ideas and whatever products or services you’re currently offering.

When many people invest in a website, they see it as something static, like a brochure or a sign. However, static page are only effective for a finite period of time. After seeing the same content over and over, visitors’ interest will wane, and they will stop coming back, leading to a drop in sales and profits. In order to keep your website popular and maximize your return on investment, it’s important to offer constantly changing content that visitors will want to see.

While providing dynamic content may sound easy in theory, it’s often tougher in practice - website maintenance takes both time and skill, and hiring an in house web designer can prove prohibitively expensive for most small businesses. This leaves many business owners in a tricky situation - they can either let their website languish, or they can devote a significant amount of their time to maintaining it.

At Swift Media UK, we offer another solution. With our website maintenance programs, we’ll make sure that your site responds quickly and effectively to change, whether we designed it or not. Seamlessly integrating short-term promotions, scripted content changes and daily updates, we’ll leave you free to manage your business without the stress of personally maintaining your site.

In addition to ordinary changes and updates, we can work with you to make the most of ongoing internet or conventional marketing campaigns. Integrating your website with your direct mail and electronic media initiatives, we’ll ensure that you get the maximum return from all forms of advertising.

Maintaining dynamic content is a great way to develop customer loyalty, but many of the currently available methods require more time or money than small businesses can offer. By partnering with Swift Media UK, you can enjoy the benefits of a dynamically changing website without breaking the bank or devoting an unreasonable amount of time to website maintenance.

Below are the website maintenance services we currently offer:

  • Content and copy updates
  • Staff / personnel changes
  • News Alerts
  • Updating hyperlinks
  • Press releases
  • Graphic design & changes
  • Industry related news stories
  • New web pages
  • New products / service bulletins
  • Overall appearance
  • Product and pricing changes
  • And much more.

SEO Copywriting

What is SEO Copy writing?
SEO Copy writing, or to give it its full name, search engine optimization copy writing or search engine copy writing, is the technique of writing the viewable text on a web page in such a way that it reads well for the surfer, and also targets specific search terms. Its purpose is to rank highly in the search engines for the targeted search terms.

As well as the viewable text, SEO Copy writing usually optimizes other on-page elements for the targeted search terms. These include the Title, Description and Keywords tags, headings and alt text.

The idea behind SEO Copy writing is that search engines want genuine content pages and not additional pages (often called "doorway pages") that are created for the sole purpose of achieving high rankings. Therefore, the engines cannot possibly view SEO copy written pages as undesirable, and the rankings they achieve tend to be as stable as those that are achieved by other search engine optimization techniques.

Practitioners of the search engine copy writing method recommend around 250 viewable words per page, with one, or at most two, targeted search terms strategically placed within the text and other on-page elements.

SEO Copy writing strengths
One thing that can be said about search engine optimization copy writing is that works for suitable websites and for suitable search terms (see below). SEO Copy writing can achieve rankings that tend to do well across the search engines, although no page can do equally well in all engines.

It is sometimes said by practitioners of search engine optimization copy writing, that the method tends to maintain its rankings as the engines tweak and change their algorithms, whereas other methods produce less stable rankings. This can't be true. If 2 pages are in the top 10 search results; one getting there by the SEO copy writing method and the other by different search engine optimization techniques, they are both there because they match the engine's criteria (algorithm) quite well. When the criteria is changed, the match that each of them had is necessarily changed. The matches could become closer to, or further from, the engine's criteria. Whether each page goes up or down in the results depends on what changes have been made to the engine's criteria. It is a matter of chance, and not a matter of whether SEO copy writing was used or not.

SEO Copy writing is good when:-
  • there are not many search terms to target
  • the search terms are on the low to middle end of competitiveness
  • money isn't a problem, or if it is your own website
  • you don't mind the text on your pages being frozen (if money does matter)

Otherwise, 'search engine friendly' techniques should always be done as a first measure, and real search engine optimization should be done for the search terms for which 'search engine friendly' techniques are unsuccessful.

NOTE:
Competitive search terms are not necessarily those where millions of results are returned. They are those where people are competing hard for the top positions. There's a big difference.

Paid Inclusion

Paid Inclusion or paying for getting your site indexed can be considered as a "paid" extension of For a fee, site pages are reviewed and/or included in search results. The pages are just indexed, which means your website will now be a part of the search engine database. But there is no guarantee that your site will rank higher. The ranking still depends on how well you have optimized your site. When you pay for indexing, you reduce the time taken for a search engine crawler to discover and index your website.

If you pay for indexing, you can also have the search engine visit your site at frequent intervals. This is required for sites that have frequently changing content.

If your website content keeps changing more frequently than the search engine crawler visit, your content in the search engines would be outdated. Typically, sites such as price comparison portals, and news content sites would need crawlers to visit more often because the content is continuously changing.

With Paid inclusion, some search engines also offer an option where you can specify the pages you want indexed. While in it totally depends on the search engine spider to select which pages to index, when you pay for indexing, you can control which pages you would like to get indexed.

Cost is the only hurdle in these programs, with pricing models ranging from a one-time inclusion fee, to a where you pay when your site listing is shown and is clicked upon. Yahoo! Site Match, for example, operates on a pay per click model, where you pay a certain amount each time your site is found on the Yahoo search engine and clicked through by visitors.

When to pay for indexing?

  • This really depends on individual needs of your website:
  • If you have just built your site and would like it to be indexed instantly, then paid inclusion could be a good option.
  • If you have identified specific search engines that your target customers use most, you may want to pay for getting indexed on that engine and be visible to your customers.
  • If some of your key pages are not getting indexed, even though some others are, you may want consider paying for indexing those pages.
  • Important web pages undergoing constant content changes would need to get indexed more frequently. Since you want your site to be found for the current content, pay for indexing these pages frequently could be a suitable option to use.

Search Engine Marketing SEM

Pay-Per-Click Advertising Overview
Contextual Advertising by definition is text-based advertising. Contextual Advertising is available through either a flat rate cost per click model (CPC), or an auction based CPC model. Contextual Advertising on search engines may be more effective than SEO if used correctly.
Leading contextual advertising providers include; Overture and Overture Site Match, Google AdWords, Looksmart, and Find What. Pricing varies and is subject to supply and demand. SEO is many times more cost-effective, but can be limited, depending on the subject matter, content, and popularity of a given website. Contextual Advertising offers an enormous amount of advertising opportunity. WDO recommends testing Contextual Advertising in order to first determine website onversions, customer acquisition costs, and overall profit and loss margins.

Overture and Google AdWords Overview and Methodology

  • WDO creates unique titles, descriptions, and landing page recommendations per keyword targeted.

  • WDO employs “gap-bidding” technology to ensure overspending does not occur. (Gap bidding runs real time and results in bids where the gap between bidders is only $0.01).

SEO vs SEM

SEO VS SEM: Two Names for the Same Thing?
By most people's standards, the Internet is still very young. New technologies and developments in existing technologies are appearing at an extraordinary rate. As technologies change, so does the terminology used to describe them.
I worked for three years as a Webmaster. Ask a dozen people to define that term, and you'll get a lot of different answers. A Webmaster may be the leader of a large team, including developers, writers, marketers, designers, usability experts, technical support people, and yes, search engine optimizers. Or s/he may perform all or some of those duties alone.
The same is true for search engine optimization. For many people, the term is a new one, and they have no idea what it is an SEO does. To others, SEO is synonymous with SEM -- search engine marketing. In my opinion, there is a big difference between the two.

Search Engine Marketing
I see SEM as a rather broad term. It's everything that can be done to utilize the technology of search engines with the goal of promoting a web site and increasing its traffic, its "stickiness," and, in the case of sites that promote a business (or are a business), increase profits. SEO, therefore, would be a subset of SEM.
Aspects of search engine marketing, which I would consider to be outside the realm of search engine optimization, include the following:

Paid Inclusion
This is simply the practice of paying a search engine or a directory to add a site to its database immediately, rather than setting up that site so that it will be found by the search engine spiders on its own. In the case of some search engines and directories, paid inclusion is the only way to get listed. For others, it's presented as an option. If you're willing to pay, your site will be listed sooner. It's also a useful practice if you wish to make frequent changes to your content, because your site will be spidered more often and you will be able to test how changes affect your ranking.

Traditional Ads
This involves placing paid advertising on the search engine result pages (SERP). Normally, these ads appear based on the keywords entered into the search engines, and one is charged based on the number of impressions, i.e. appearances, of the ad. In other words, you pay whether the ad sends anyone to your web site or not.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising
PPC ads are simple enough to look at. They're text-only. PPC ad campaigns are completely controlled by the advertiser. You decide which keywords should bring up your ads, you write the copy, and you decide how much you want to pay. And, as the name indicates, you only pay for an ad when someone clicks it and is brought to your site. There are two main networks of PPC ads, run by Google and Overture, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages, but in both cases, one should be prepared to spend a great deal of time (and money) monitoring and adjusting such a campaign.

The Advantages of These Practices
In contrast to pure SEO, these SEM practices offer the advantage of immediacy. If you need to increase your traffic and your visibility right away, and you don't have a problem with spending a lot of money, this may be the way to go.

The Disadvantages
You knew this was coming, didn't you? Think about it this way: you've spent your time and money to bring people to your web site. What will they see when they get there? You've convinced them, at least for the moment, that your site is worth visiting, so they're expecting to find exactly the information they were seeking. Is it easy to find? Is it there at all? You only have a few seconds to convince them that your site can deliver what they want. Will your visitors, failing to find what they're looking for, click their browser's back button and try another site?
Your site has to be ready for your visitors. It needs to be written, structured, and coded in such a way that the information is clearly laid out and easy to find. If it isn't, visitors will either immediately forget your site, or worse, it will be remembered as one that fails to deliver.

SEO First
No SEM campaign is complete without SEO. Moreover, since the purpose of SEO is to make the site better for both search engines and users, you may find that it will suffice on its own. In any case, the advantages of SEO over the other aspects of SEM make it clear that, even if you are going to spend additional money on advertising and paid placement, SEO must be your first step in promoting your site.
